Day 38 – August 2nd – Chumphon back to Bangkok

We left Chumphon today to drive back to Kate’s house in Bangkok. We made two main stops along the way. The first was to see the Phraya Nakhon Cave in the Khao San Roi Yot National Park (more on that stop below). Our second stop was at an Italian restaurant in Hua Hin. Kate wanted to give us a chance to eat at a more “western” restaurant and also to see Hua Hin, an area that has a strong western influence in Thailand. We had a nice dinner and got back about 9:30 pm.

Our trip to Phraya Nakhon Cave was incredible. We got there later in the day so we opted to take a boat to the far side of the island where the cave resides. We then made the 580 m trek to the cave up the side of the mountain. We have learned in Thailand that they have steep hills and they don’t make switchbacks, the trails go straight up! Usually the trails have stone steps to make it a little easier. However, it was hot and humid yesterday and everyone (other tourists included) were soaking wet with sweat on the climb. The reward was worth it as the cave was amazing. We spent at least 30 minutes there looking around and enjoying the cave. Finally, we got another treat on the way down. A Dusky-Leaf monkey crossed the path right in front of us and then posed so we could get some pictures.

Nee unfortunately did not make it all of the way up the hill. She is not used to climbing hills and the heat was too much for her. She had popsicles and cold water ready for us at the bottom when we got back.
