Day 21 – July 16 – Drive to Bright, Victoria, Australia

Today we left our AirBnB in Geelong and drove to Bright, Victoria. We stopped in Melbourne at a Costco (yes, they have Costco in Australia) to get groceries for our week in Bright. We arrived a few minutes before 10 am (it opened at 10). Tari went in to get groceries and I sat in the car planning our route for the day and making sure we had everything we needed to check-in to our timeshare here in Bright. By 11 am the Costco parking lot was completely full…it was insanity! Costco is just as popular here as it is in the USA. Tari came out a little after 11 and we had a person follow her to get our parking spot.
We made one other stop at Aldi to get the groceries that we couldn’t get at Costco and then drove the remaining three hours (we drove a little over an hour to get to Costco from Geelong) to Bright. We checked in about 3:30 pm, moved into our cottage, and walked a little more than a mile to town. We went to the Woolworth’s grocery store to get a few more things, walked around town for a little longer, and then came back to our cottage. Tari made a nice chicken fried rice meal and then we finished our unpacking for the week.
Here are the places we stayed in Australia. The first two pictures show our AirBnB in Geelong. I decided to reserve this tiny house in Geelong for a few reasons: it was cheaper, it was located near the places I wanted to visit in Geelong, and I wanted to try a tiny house. I quickly learned I am NOT a tiny house person. We had little room for our suitcases and I was a little claustrophobic in the bed in the loft. The tiny house was nice but I am happy to have moved on from there. We now have a two bedroom cottage with much more space. The cottage is the third picture below.

Our two-bedroom cottage here in Bright. The blue Subaru is our rental car for the 10 days here in Australia. I will take some pictures of the cottage and the of place that we are staying at here. I am going to rent a bicycle tomorrow for the week and do some riding in the area. Although it is winter here, you can see that many plants still have leaves. Temps are in the upper 50’s during the day and upper 30’s at night. My kind of weather.

An example of the landscape in the area surrounding the town of Bright. Pretty rolling hills. We are at the foothills of the Victorian mountains here in Victoria, Australia. You can see snow on the higher peaks (we will drive up at some point). We talked about trying to ski but they are having a warm winter and the snow cover is thin and very icy (mostly man-made snow).
This is the walking/bike trail that is directly behind our cottage. It goes 30 miles in each direction from Bright and provides lots of options for bike rides. I am looking forward to exploring it over the next week. Also a great trail for the one mile walk to the downtown area of Bright.
Sunset on our first evening in Bright. We saw this as we walked back from town. You can see the small sliver of the moon through the trees and Venus up in the upper right corner of the photo. Plan on going out on a clear evening and seeing the southern stars…interested to see if i can pick out some of the constellations here in the southern hemisphere.
