Today we took a trip to the southern part of Hawaii including Volcanoes National Park and Hilo.

Southern Hawai’i Coast – We started the day by driving down the Kona Coast to the southern coast of Hawai’i. We stopped at Punalu’u Beach Park and walked on a black sand beach and then stopped at an ocean view to see the striking southern coast.

Punalu’u Beach Park

Black sand beach on the southern end of Hawai’i. Although sea turtles often visit this beach, we did not see any.

Southern coast cliffs

From a turnout on the main road. A view of the cliffs and the Pacific Ocean south of Hawai’i.

Southern coast looking towards Volcanoes National Park

More coastline. You can see Volcanoes National Park, our main destination of the day, in the distance.

Our e-bikes

Posing with our E-bikes with Mauna Loa (covered with clouds) and Kilauea (directly behind us) in the background.

Kilauea

Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world, sending out gases. Unfortunately, not actively erupting right now.

Kilauea – different view

A closer view of the gases coming out of the Kilauea crater.
